How to Get Started with Digital Planning
Digital planning is on the hype these days, and it’s not going anywhere. It’s easy, portable, budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and accessible.
And, now that you know the benefits and of digital planning VS paper planning and why you should go paperless, stay here if you want to know how to get started with digital planning the easy way.
1 | DEVICES AND TOOLS
The first you need to get started with digital planning is your digital device. You can use pretty much any tablet, from iPad, Android, and even Windows Surface.
With your iPad or tablet, you can use whatever stylus that you already have, whatever it is that is compatible with your tablet.
I use an iPad pro of 10.5 inches with the Apple pencil.
Also, with your iPad or tablet you can opt to have a matte screen protector, so you can protect your screen and also feel like you’re writing on real paper. I’ve heard pretty great things about PaperLike, and can’t wait to try it out 🙂
And the best news is that you can also use other devices for digital planning!
Yes, if you don’t have an iPad or tablet, you can use your phone or your laptop.
Besides, if you’d like to sync your planner over all your devices, depending on the app you use, you can do it! Whether you just want to check something on the phone, or quickly type something on your laptop, you can do it pretty easily.
So, with what device should you start? Honestly with the one you already have and use. I love my iPad Pro because it’s portable, it’s easy to use, and I love writing things down on it. But if what you have is a Samsung note or phone, or simply your laptop and you already love using it, go for it!
2 | APPS
Something else that you absolutely need for digital planning, is an annotation app such as GoodNotes, Notability, Xodo, or Zoom Notes.
These apps allow you to open your planner, make notes, write down your plans, create doodles, click on hyperlinked tabs and menus, highlight stuff, and so much more.
As I mentioned before, some of these apps allow you to sync your files through all your devices, and you can even add stickers, images, and type text.
My favorite app and the one I use is GoodNotes. This is the first app of this kind that I knew about, and it was the first I started to use, but you can watch my videos and posts reviewing Notability and Xodo so you can know my thoughts on both of these apps.
With what app should you start? Well, most apps of this kind are not free, but they’re not expensive either, they cost around $8-$10, except for Xodo which is free.
If you don’t mind those few extra dollars I’d say GoodNotes because it has a lot more features and it’s more versatile than the rest. But, if you are on a budget, then you can absolutely start with Xodo.
3 | PLANNER
Now we got to the fun part! Yay! The number one reason I switch to digital planning. The planners!!
In August of 2018, I discovered a thing called digital notebook on Pinterest, I love Dying things so I created one pretty quickly in my laptop, and I started using it on my iPad.
I couldn’t stop writing, journaling, and brainstorming there. I loved using it so much that I brought one of my printable planners to my iPad, and I got caught.
I was a paper kinda girl my entire life. I used to collect all kinds of notebooks and planners. But, since using my iPad for planning, I haven’t looked back – I even have a couple of notebooks in their original plastic sleeve, new without opening!
So yeah, I have a digital planner for pretty much every area of my life:
- My regular planner for my day to day
- My business planner, for my business and marketing
- My Etsy planner, to run my shop on Etsy
- My fitness + health planner, to keep track of my fitness and become healthier
- My blog planner, for my YouTube channel and my blog!
- And, an academic planner because I’m learning Italian
And you can find even more planners and inserts for other kinds of things in my shop. If it’s not there, comment below and I’ll put it up!
Having a digital planner for each area of my life has helped me to stay focused and be more productive than ever. And what’s more important to keep the overwhelm at bay.
Now on to the important question. What digital planner is best for you?
Let’s start with what goal you’re pursuing right now?
Is it to stay on top of your daily to-dos and tasks? A weekly or even daily planner would be great.
Is your goal to get fit, become healthier, or maybe lose some weight? Definitely the fitness planner.
Is it to be more organized in your business, build a strong foundation, and create a marketing strategy that sticks? The business + marketing planner is your best bet.
You can have as many digital planners as you want. The rule here is to know the purpose of each one so you can make the most out of them.
4 | STICKERS AND STICKY NOTES
Finally, the stickers and sticky notes! Who doesn’t love some pretty planners, right?
Personally, I love to decorate my planners, but sometimes, most of the times I rather do some minimal decorating because I have pretty important stuff to do. But if you love decorating your planner and your spreads, you’re going to love the stickers and the sticky notes and everything you have at your disposal for prettying up your planner.
Sticky notes are pretty much my favorite because they’re very easy to use, you can pretty quickly grab a sticky note to emphasize something on your planner, maybe a date, maybe a task, or maybe just a cute reminder for yourself.
These sticky notes are my favorite because they have a to-do list and some checkboxes for you to tick off when you’re done.
So, with what digital stickers or sticky notes should you start with?
If your new at digital planning, I would say start with some basic digital stickers, like those with the weekdays, with to-do, due date, pay bills, stuff like that.
And if you like to decorate a lot more you can take other kinds of planner stickers with colored boxes or printed squares like these.
Now you know everything you need to get started with digital planning, grab your favorite device, download that annotation app, get your new digital planner and your new digital stickers, and let’s get this party started!
